How much does communal cleaning cost?
Communal area cleaning costs £40 to £150 a visit for a small block and £150 to £400 for a larger one. Hourly rates run £17 to £24, and a one-off deep clean of the common parts is £250 to £800.

Get the specification listed area by area before you compare prices. Two quotes for a block are almost never for the same work, the difference is usually the bin store and the internal glass, and a cheaper contract that leaves both out is not cheaper at all once somebody has to arrange them separately.

- Frequency, which is usually weekly or fortnightly.
- What is inside the specification, particularly bin stores and internal glass.
- Whether there is water and power in the common parts.
- Access and parking, which decide how much of the visit is spent working.
- Reporting, from a signed sheet to a logged visit with photographs.

Questions about communal cleaning
Are the windows included?
The internal common part glass usually is. The external elevations are a separate contract and often a separate trade, because above the ground floor it needs access equipment.
What about the bin store?
Normally in the specification, and normally the hardest area to keep right. Ask what the contractor does when it is being misused, because a rota alone will not fix that.
