How much does gym cleaning cost?
Gym cleaning costs £35 to £70 a visit for a small studio and £80 to £200 for a large facility, or £17 to £24 an hour. Deep cleaning rubber flooring is £2 to £5 a square metre and mat and upholstery extraction is £120 to £400.

Write the flooring product into the specification rather than leaving it to the contractor. Rubber gym flooring is the most expensive surface in the building and the damage from the wrong cleaner appears about a year after the decision that caused it, by which point nobody can say which contractor it was.

- Floor area, and how much of it is changing rooms.
- Opening hours, and whether there is any window with no members in the building.
- Flooring type, since rubber needs specific products and a machine that suits it.
- How many showers and lockers, which are the slowest rooms in the building.
- Frequency, from daily to several visits a day on a busy site.
- Periodic work: flooring deep cleans, mat extraction and shower descaling.
Questions about gym cleaning
Why does the gym still smell?
Because the smell is in the mats, the bench upholstery and the flooring rather than on the surfaces. It needs periodic extraction and deep cleaning of those items, which a daily clean does not include.
What is the risk in the showers?
Warm water standing in a head or a little-used outlet. Descaling and flushing on a schedule is the control, and it usually sits in the cleaning specification while the risk assessment sits with the operator.
