How much does hard floor cleaning cost?

Hard floor cleaning costs £1.50 to £4 a square metre for a deep clean and £3 to £7 for stripping and resealing. Most contractors set a minimum of £150 to £250 for a visit, and wood floor restoration is quoted separately at £15 to £30 a square metre.

Typical prices

Ranges, not quotes. A quote depends on the area and the floor it is laid in.

Wood floor clean and buff, per square metre£4 to £9

Ask for a test patch before committing on a large floor. It takes twenty minutes, it shows what is build-up and what is worn surface, and on a floor that turns out to be worn rather than dirty it is the difference between a clean and a new floor.

What moves the price

  • The floor type, which decides the method before the area decides the price.
  • Clean or strip and reseal, which is roughly a doubling.
  • How much build-up there is, and how many coats have to come off.
  • Area, and whether the machine can actually reach it. Edges and corners are hand work.
  • Furniture. A cleared floor is quoted differently from one worked around.
  • Access and hours, since commercial floors are usually done overnight.
