Retail cleaning costs £25 to £60 a visit for a small shop, £60 to £150 for a mid-size unit and £100 to £300 for a large store. Hourly rates run £17 to £24, and hard floor periodic work is £1.50 to £4 a square metre.

Measure your entrance matting before you increase the cleaning frequency. Most of what ends up on a shop floor arrived on somebody's shoes, a proper run at the door takes it before it travels, and lengthening the matting is a one-off cost that reduces a bill you are paying every week.

Questions about retail cleaning
Does matting really make a difference?
A large one. Most of what dirties a shop floor walks in on shoes, and a run of matting long enough to take several footfalls stops it at the door. It is cheaper than the cleaning it saves.
What about the stockroom?
Usually a longer cycle, monthly or fortnightly. It is the first area dropped from a specification and the one where the consequences show up as damaged stock rather than as a dirty floor.
