Soot is the soiling that punishes carelessness. It is fine, oily and slightly acidic, so wetting it first turns a dry deposit that would have vacuumed out into a spreading stain, and left on metal or glass for long enough it etches them.

Dry extraction therefore comes before anything wet, and on a bad deposit that means specialist sponges rather than a vacuum. A company that asks whether the room has a working fire before quoting a carpet clean is asking the question that decides the method.
