A carpet that has had a supermarket spot remover used on it is a harder job than one left alone, and that is the awkward thing to say to somebody who has tried to help. Most retail spotters are left in the fibre rather than rinsed out, and the sticky residue attracts soil into exactly the patch that was treated.
Which is why a treated spot often reappears darker than its surroundings. It is recoverable, and it takes a rinse rather than another product, so the useful thing is simply to say what has already been tried rather than leaving it to be discovered.
